Newsletter November 2023
Dear member and friend of 5 Skoler.
We would like to start this newsletter by thanking you for your support. On a daily basis, we are ‘just’ the two of us. Maren and Zarah. But we never feel alone, because you have our backs. You, our volunteers and our partners.
There are many current and terrible conflicts out in the world, but our pupils are still here, stranded indefinitely, and in as much need of help as before. So thank you for not forgetting them.
Winter-ready Pupils
It costs DKK 175 to prepare a pupil for winter. This means a warm shirt and a pair of boots for a student: https://www.5skoler.nu/individual-donation/
We hope that we can give all our 1200 pupils a set before the cold and rain really sets in. Should you have a company that would like to give gifts to our pupils, please reach out. We are happy to send our greetings to employees, business partners, etc.
Roccamore x 5 Skoler
We were proud when Frederikke Schmidt, founder of the shoe brand Roccamore, told us that she would like to do a campaign with 5 Skoler. That they would like to help us put the Syrian children on the agenda and spread the message to the whole of Denmark. Roccamore calls the campaign Sneakers for Sneakers, and every time a pair of sneakers is sold, they donate a pair of locally produced sneakers to one of our pupils. The campaign has gone very well, and at the time of writing over 1200 pairs of shoes have been sold. You can see the campaign here: https://www.roccamore.com/pages/sneakers-for-sneakers

New School in Beirut
In the middle of a slum in Beirut, we have transformed an abandoned orphanage into the most beautiful school. The renovation work was huge, and not without a few bad nerves along the way, but luckily we’ve done it before and we can feel how much we’ve learned over the years. We were there for the opening of the school, and we have no doubts at all about the enormous importance it has for the pupils who can now call themselves schoolchildren. They come from enormous poverty, and if we hadn’t opened a school, found the children on the street, held them by the hand, talked to their parents, etc., they would never have started school.
The school is financed by the real estate industry, which many contributors have joined together again this year for the benefit of 5 Skoler.
School in a Bus
Copenhagen Offshore Partners has donated a bus, which we have transformed into a school. The cutest and funnest school. We use the school as a kind of test school. This means that we drive the bus to a camp where we would like to build a school, but need to test the project. We have done this with great success in a camp where there is now a permanent school. The bus has since moved on to a new camp.

Anniversaty Donation from Moalem Weitemeyer
The lawyer partnership Moalem Weitemeyer, which pro bono helps 5 Skoler with everything legal issues, and which now in its third year pays for the operation of two schools, celebrated its 15th anniversary this summer. Instead of wine and flowers, they asked for donations to 5 Skoler. This resulted in a total donation of almost DKK 200,000. We are so grateful for your undying support and care for our pupils. The money goes to jackets, boots and food for the pupils.
New Partners
We have got two new partners on board. New Power Partners, who help ensure our administration and salary, so that all other donations can still go 100% uncut to our projects. Blue Power Partners, with whom we will build a school together, and who also help secure food for the pupils. Welcome and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your trust.

Ny School on the Way from Ikano Group
Ikano Group has held their annual health week, and this year they have collected for the benefit of 5 Skoler. For a whole week, employees from all over the world have been exercising in the name of our pupils. This has resulted in a donation that ensures an entire school with food for 3 years. It is wildly impressive and generous. We are filled with gratitude.
Zumba
We have gotten a local volunteer in 5 Skoler. Her name is Hazall and she is a gift to our pupils. Four times a week she visits a school where she teaches Zumba. It’s so fun and life-affirming to see both girls and boys dancing side by side, coordinating movements, sweating and laughing so hard they can’t catch their breath. She helps create a celebration in everyday life.

Visiting Mayor
Finally, we can report on a distinguished visit the other day. We had a visit from Frederiksberg’s mayor Michael Vindfeldt, who was curious to know more about our work. We (Maren and Zarah) both live in Frederiksberg, and are often out at schools in the municipality to talk about our work. Our pupils had drawn portraits of Michael, which he took home.
It was a pleasant afternoon, and we are happy about the recognition that comes from being visited by a mayor 😊
